Fall 2008 Full of Reasons to Celebrate Alpha Chapter!

Caitlin Cavanaugh, Alpha Chapter President, has provided some wonderful highlights of the fall 2008 semester thus far:
  • Anita, an Alumna Initiate of the chapter and the house cook, won Taste of DePauw for the 5th year running with her famous Veggie Pizza.

  • The AXO Anchor Splash Team won Delta Gamma's Philanthropy, Anchor Splash.

  • Alpha Chapter placed 3rd overall in Greek Week

  • The chapter held a pumpkin carving event with the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha to celebrate Halloween

  • A new sign was installed at Alpha. This was done with financial help from both the local house corporation and Parent's Club.

Congratulations again to Alpha Chapter for the achievement of the Continuing Excellence Award from the Alpha Chi Omega National Council. The chapter will be hosting a Chapter Excellence Evening on November 20th, formerly the Scholarship Dinner, to celebrate ALL of the Chapter's accomplishments, including those of individual members. For the first time, they will be inviting all academic department chairs, the Greek Life Coordinators, the Dean of Students, President Casey, the Alpha Advisory Board, staff at Headquarters, and other special AXO guests! This event will definitely be one for the books!

Alpha Chi Omega Convention 2008 - Scottsdale, AZ

First, let me thank you for nominating me to be NON’s delegate to the convention. It was an honor to be formally seated in front of the 2008 convention body and be recognized as a trendsetter in alum chapters. There were a few other virtual chapter delegates in attendance, and I think that the number will only grow in the years to come.

During the formal chapter meetings, we elected a new national council that will be great for our fraternity as we head into the future. We also passed some legislation that will assist future nominating committees in creating a national council slate as well as installed a new nominating committee for the 2010 national council slate.

We were a part of two new marketing/branding initiatives. Alpha Chi Omega announced it’s new branding with an inspirational video that can be found on You Tube. The new branding includes new graphics, updated colors, and a new tagline that reads Alpha Chi Omega Real. Strong. Women. We also were a part of the launching of Alpha Chi Omega Life Loyal. For more information, please check this website http://www.lifeloyalaxo.org/. I strongly encourage all of you to join me in becoming a life loyal member of Alpha Chi. In addition to these changes, they have also created a Facebook page for the fraternity, so check that out if you are a Facebooker.

Finally, I was able to attend some interesting educational sessions on the last day. One session centered on how to create and sustain an effective virtual chapter. Be looking forward to some innovative changes in our chapter to help us become more effective and connected to our DePauw chapter.

Again, thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be your delegate. It was a great opportunity for me to renew my spirit. The next convention is in Washington, DC in 2010, and it would be great for NON to be represented once again.

ITB,
Jenny Breck

April Alumnae Newsletter Information

National Council Update

This month, National President Donna Chereck shares the following for our National Council update:

Since 2003, the National Council, Foundation Board of Trustees and National Housing Corporation board have come together annually for Strategic Planning Weekend. It is a time we have all come to look forward to as we are all committed to strategic planning for the betterment of our sisterhood and for the need to regularly evaluate the 2005-2010 Alpha Chi Omega Strategic Plan. Recognizing that challenges, accomplishments and changes within our industry will necessitate revisions to even the best strategic plan, all three boards have approved several revisions of the SP the last three years. In August, 2007 the Headquarters staff (led by our new Executive Director, Cheri O'Neill) assumed responsibility of implementing the current Strategic Plan. The first step in assuming that responsibility was to review where we have been, our accomplishments to date and to revise the plan based on what we have "left to do" during the next two years.

Together the three boards and staff have reaffirmed that strategic planning for Alpha Chi Omega has become and should remain standard operating procedure for the organization.

We also reaffirm that this plan (and any future plan) will remain driven by:
§ Sensitivity to member needs
§ Insight into the current and future environment
§ Understanding of the capacity of the organization
§ Effective analysis of the implications of policy and program choices

The three boards agreed that this year's work called for a two-year strategic commitment, running from 2008-2010. That will enable Alpha Chi Omega's three boards to focus their 2009 strategic planning efforts on a new five-year plan, one that covers the years 2010 to 2015.

The outcome measures we agreed upon are ambitious and specific. This spring Cheri and her staff will critically look at the financial and personnel (staff and volunteer) resources of the Enterprise (the 3 corporations), work to prepare the 2008-2009 business plan and budget and present their recommendations to the three boards in June.

For a "sneak peek", I would like to share with you how our 5 major goals have been reworded

1. RELEVANCE (previously engagement of members/attracting members)
2. REPUTATION ( previously external perceptions and relationships)
3. RECRUIT ( previously attracting members)
4. RETAIN ( previously engaging members)
5. RESOURCES (previously resources)

Why make the change?
§ Converts goals into stronger action verbs
§ Separates out need to create relevance in order to attract and retain
§ Shows that reputation-building is both internal and external
§ Converts to measurable recruitment vs. hard-to-measure engagement
§ Easier to remember with "R" device

I want all of you to know that as elected leaders of our fraternity, each and every one of you can plan a vital role in the work we have to accomplish the next two years. My hope is that the innovative thinking of the National Council, BOT, NHC board and Management Team will inspire you to lead and further Alpha Chi Omega's tradition of leadership for years to come. Together we can work together to make our aspirations become accomplishments.

Alpha Hall of Commitment

Nu Omega Nu helped 37 Alpha Chapter seniors celebrate their upcoming graduation by conducting the Hall of Commitment ceremony on Sunday, April 13, 2008. The ceremony was held in historic Meharry Hall on the DePauw campus. Katie Breck (Alpha) led the Hall of Commitment assisted by seven other alumnae. Province Alumnae Chair, Lisa Stiers (Epsilon Omicron) and Province Collegiate Chair, Kristin Himsel (Alpha) were both part of the event. After the formal ceremony, Katie shared with the women memories of her pledge class including the group’s amazing fundraising effort to remodel the chapter room at the Alpha house in honor of their 50th class reunion. She urged the seniors to stay in touch with each other and involved in Alpha Chi Omega as she and her sisters have done.

Immediately following the ceremony, a dessert reception was held at the chapter house organized by Chapter Advisor, Darby Kennedy. Each graduating senior received a gift from the alumnae chapter including a personalized letter from an Alpha Chi Omega alumna. Thanks to the many fantastic Alpha Chi Omegas across the country who agreed to write notes, these seniors now have both a special memento of the day and a wonderful example of alumnae involvement after the collegiate experience! Nu Omega Nu members encouraged the seniors to take part in the virtual chapter and hope to have many new faces in the coming months!
